A monument to liquidators of the Chernobyl disaster was opened in Zaporizhzhya
April 26 is the anniversary of the Chernobyl tragedy, which happened 32 years
ago. A meeting-requiem was held in Zaporizhzhya, dedicated to one of the worst
disasters in human history. A monument to the disaster liquidators was opened
during the event.
A long-awaited monument to the heroes of the liquidators of the Chernobyl
disaster was opened in Zaporozhye in their honor. It was sculpted by Ruben
Oganesyan, architect – Vadim Petrenko. Chernobyl veterans directly participated
in the creation and selection of the site.
The memorial is symbolic. It is constructed on a circular platform, which
indicates the planetary scale of the disaster. Inclined slab symbolizes the
scorched earth. The three hundred-pound ball is a peaceful atom that has come
out of control and stopped in an inclined square. It appears from a temporary
archway portal, a symbol of the division of life before and after an accident. The
bell on it is an element of almost all monuments to Chernobyl. The newly
opened monument was laid with flowers and the victims of the crash were
honored with a moment of silence.
